What makes a Mountain Chassis caravan chassis "bespoke"?
Every chassis we build is designed from scratch around your specific vehicle, load and intended use, rather than selected from a range of standard sizes — whether it’s a chassis for caravan, off-road or specialty use. Mountain Chassis doesn’t offer off-the-shelf options; every build starts with a conversation about your application.
Does Mountain Chassis manufacture custom trailers as well as caravan chassis?
Yes. Alongside our core caravan chassis builds, Mountain Chassis is also a trailer manufacturer, building flatbed, box, plant, tradie, camper and bespoke trailers from the same Campbellfield workshop, to the same Australian steel and AS/NZS welding standard.
How long does it take to build a caravan chassis?
Lead times vary with how busy the workshop is. During quieter periods, builds typically take around 2 weeks from order to completion; during busier periods, this can extend to 8–10 weeks. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe as part of your quote and can provide you with any updates throughout the process as well.
Is Mountain Chassis ADR 62 compliant?
Yes. Where a build requires ADR 62 compliance, we provide a traceable compliance certificate for the chassis, so it can be incorporated into a caravan manufacturer’s overall compliance sign-off without unnecessary administrative back-and-forth.
Do you only work with caravan manufacturers, or private customers too?
Both. We work with caravan manufacturers on production runs, and directly with custom builders, trades and private buyers on individual projects.
Can I get pricing for a caravan chassis online?
We don’t publish prices, because every chassis is genuinely bespoke and the cost depends on your specification. Get in touch and we’ll talk you through an honest, itemised quote that actually reflects the requirements of your build.
Do you repair or upgrade a chassis Mountain Chassis didn't build?
Yes. We handle structural crack repair, reinforcement, extension and refurbishment on chassis built by other manufacturers as well as our own, and can retrofit suspension and coupling upgrades to an existing chassis as well.
What warranty comes with a Mountain Chassis build?
Every chassis we build is backed by a 3-year warranty. Full terms are provided at the time of quoting.
Caravan Chassis FAQs
How important is a caravan's chassis, and why does it matter?
A caravan chassis is the structural frame the whole caravan is built onto — it carries the load, absorbs the road, and determines how the van tows and how long it lasts. If the chassis isn’t built right, nothing else about the caravan matters.
What configurations of caravan chassis does Mountain Chassis build?
We build on-road, semi off-road, off-road and specialty caravan chassis, all engineered from scratch to your vehicle, load and intended use rather than selected from a standard range. This ensures you’re not paying for capability you’ll never use, or stuck with a chassis that can’t handle the roads you actually tow on.
What's the difference between a semi off-road and off-road caravan chassis?
A semi off-road chassis is reinforced for a mix of sealed roads and formed gravel tracks with light corrugations, while a full off-road chassis is built with heavier-duty construction for sustained rough terrain and remote, unsealed travel. We’ll confirm the right configuration for your actual application during your quote.
How do I know which configuration is right for my build?
Tell us your vehicle, your load, and how you’re actually planning to use it — mostly sealed roads, a mix of sealed and gravel, or serious remote travel — and we’ll recommend the right configuration as part of your quote. You don’t need to know the technical specifics before you call.
What finish options are available for a caravan chassis?
Hot-dip galvanised, powder coat, or painted. Each suits different conditions — hot-dip galvanised for maximum corrosion resistance in off-road or coastal use, powder coat and paint for on-road and semi off-road builds.
Is Mountain Chassis' caravan chassis ADR 62 compliant?
Yes. We provide a traceable ADR 62 compliance certificate with every relevant build, so it can be incorporated into a caravan manufacturer’s overall compliance sign-off without extra back-and-forth.
How much does a custom caravan chassis cost?
We don’t publish prices, because every chassis for caravan and trailer applications is genuinely bespoke and the cost depends on configuration, size and finish. Get in touch and we’ll talk you through an honest, itemised quote.
How long does it take to build a caravan chassis?
Lead times vary with how busy the workshop is — typically around 2 weeks in quieter periods, extending to 8–10 weeks when busy. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe as part of your quote.
Can Mountain Chassis build a chassis for a specialty application like a tiny home or food van?
Yes. Specialty configurations — tiny homes, food vans, fifth wheelers, fold-up A-frame builds and other purpose-built projects — are engineered around the specific application from the ground up, the same as our on-road and off-road caravan chassis work.
Trailer Services FAQs
What types of trailers does Mountain Chassis build?
Flatbed, box, plant, tradie, camper and purpose-built trailers, in our Campbellfield workshop, all built to the specific job rather than picked from a fixed range.
Can I get a fully custom trailer built to my own specification?
Yes, that’s the default, not an upgrade option. Tell us the load, the use case and anything specific you need, and we’ll design around it from the ground up, with everything pre-approved before we start.
Is a Mountain Chassis trailer suitable for commercial and trade use?
Yes. Plant and tradie trailers especially are built for regular, everyday commercial use, rated for the load and conditions of daily work rather than occasional weekend use.
What steel does Mountain Chassis use for its trailers?
Australian-sourced steel, selected for the load and application, welded to AS/NZS standards.
Is a Mountain Chassis trailer ADR compliant?
Yes, trailer’s coupling and drawbar are ADR 62 compliant, we provide a traceable certificate with the build.
We don’t publish prices as every trailer’s cost depends on type, size and finish. Get in touch and we’ll walk you through an honest, itemised quote.
Suspension & Coupling FAQs
Can you retrofit off-road suspension to an existing caravan?
In many cases, yes. We assess the existing chassis, design and fit independent off-road suspension, upgrade the coupling if needed, and reinforce mounting points where required. Whether it’s worth doing depends on the original chassis design; we’ll give you a straight answer either way.
What's the difference between independent suspension, leaf spring suspension and airbag suspension?
Independent suspension gives each wheel its own movement, best for off-road and corrugated touring. Leaf spring suspension is the simpler, more cost-effective option for on-road and general-purpose use. Airbag suspension adds adjustable ride height and load-levelling, and pairs well with either of the other two. Give us a call and we can discuss what’s most suitable for your needs.
What couplings do you fit?
The full range: standard ball couplings, override couplings, electric brake-compatible couplings, and off-road articulating couplings including McHitch and DO35. We’ll recommend the right one for your application.
Is a Mountain Chassis coupling and drawbar ADR 62 compliant?
Yes. We provide a traceable ADR 62 compliance certificate where required.
Can you work on suspension or coupling for a chassis you didn't build?
Yes. We regularly assess and upgrade chassis, vans and trailers we didn’t originally build, including retrofit suspension and coupling work.
How much does a suspension upgrade or retrofit cost?
It depends on the setup and what’s actually needed, so we don’t publish prices for that reason. Get in touch and we’ll assess it properly before quoting. There’s no obligation to work with us.
What warranty applies to suspension and coupling work?
Work carried out by Mountain Chassis is covered by the same 3-year frame warranty. For standalone retrofit work, we’ll confirm the applicable warranty as part of your quote.
Repairs & Upgrades FAQs
Can Mountain Chassis repair a cracked caravan or trailer chassis?
Yes. Structural crack repair is core to what we do. We assess the full extent of the damage, prepare the area properly, and carry out structural weld repairs to AS/NZS standards, not just a patch to get you moving again.
Is it cheaper to repair a chassis than replace it?
Often, yes. A properly executed repair or targeted upgrade can bring a chassis back to full service at a fraction of the cost of replacement. It depends on the extent of the damage. This is why we complete a full assessment and provide a transparent quote with our recommendations.
Do you provide a quote before starting work?
Always. You’ll get a clear, itemised quote before any work begins. If the scope changes during the job — for example, additional damage found once we’re into a repair — we discuss it with you before proceeding.
Can you extend or reinforce an existing chassis for more capacity?
Yes. Chassis extensions, subframe additions and re-rating are all things we handle, with engineering certification arranged where the change requires it for compliance and registration.
Do you handle rust and corrosion repair?
Yes — from spot repair and re-coating through to a full strip and re-galvanise, depending on how far the corrosion has progressed.
How do I get started if I think my chassis needs repair?
Call us or send through the enquiry form with a brief description of the issue. We’ll arrange a time to talk it through, inspect the chassis or trailer if needed, and give you a quote an
