Independent, Leaf Spring or Airbag Suspension — Plus the Coupling to Match

Whether you’re speccing a new chassis or upgrading what you’ve already got, Mountain Chassis fits and retrofits suspension and coupling systems from our Campbellfield workshop — matched to your actual load, terrain and tow setup.

We regularly fit McHitch and DO35 couplings, ADR 62-compliant drawbars, and suspension retrofits for caravans and trailers across Melbourne and Victoria.

Get the Spec Right the First Time

Suspension and coupling decide how a caravan or trailer actually rides, tracks and lasts. Get it wrong and you’re looking at premature tyre wear, chassis fatigue, and a tow that fights you the whole way home — problems that show up months later, not on day one.

Mountain Chassis fits and retrofits independent, leaf spring and airbag suspension, plus the full range of couplings and drawbars, matched to your load and where you’re actually travelling.

This isn’t only a new-build service. If you’ve already got a van or trailer that’s under-specced for what you’re now asking of it, we can assess the existing setup and retrofit from there.

Who We Build For

Not Sure Which Configuration You Need?

Suspension Options We Specialise In

Independent Suspension

Each wheel moves independently, meaning better articulation and ground contact over corrugations and rough terrain, and the gold standard for serious off-road caravan suspension and rough-road touring

Leaf Spring Suspension

The proven, cost-effective workhorse — simple, robust, and easy to have serviced anywhere in Australia.

Airbag Suspension

For serious remote and unsealed-road travel. Heavier-duty construction, engineered to handle sustained corrugations and rough terrain — built to your actual application and load, not a generic “off-road” label.

Custom & Retrofit Suspension Options

Unusual application, heavy hauler needing uplift, or an existing setup that needs re-engineering, we design and build to suit.

Couplings & Drawbars

Suspension is only half the job — the coupling and drawbar do the work of connecting tow vehicles to trailers safely. We fabricate and fit:

Assessment

For an existing van or trailer, we inspect the current chassis, suspension and mounting points before recommending anything. For a new build, we work from the chassis spec already underway.

Recommendation & Quote

We recommend the combination that actually suits your load and terrain — not the most expensive option — then quote it, itemised, before anything starts.

04

Fitment

Carried out at the Campbellfield workshop. Mounting points reinforced where needed, then suspension and coupling fitted.

Geometry Check & Handover

Alignment and geometry checked post-fitment, not assumed. Ready for collection or delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you retrofit off-road suspension to an existing caravan?
In many cases, yes. We assess the existing chassis, design and fit independent off-road suspension, upgrade the coupling if needed, and reinforce mounting points where required. Whether it’s worth doing depends on the original chassis design; we’ll give you a straight answer either way.
Independent suspension gives each wheel its own movement, best for off-road and corrugated touring. Leaf spring suspension is the simpler, more cost-effective option for on-road and general-purpose use. Airbag suspension adds adjustable ride height and load-levelling, and pairs well with either of the other two. Give us a call and we can discuss what’s most suitable for your needs.
The full range: standard ball couplings, override couplings, electric brake-compatible couplings, and off-road articulating couplings including McHitch and DO35. We’ll recommend the right one for your application.
Yes. We provide a traceable ADR 62 compliance certificate where required.
Yes. We regularly assess and upgrade chassis, vans and trailers we didn’t originally build, including retrofit suspension and coupling work.
It depends on the setup and what’s actually needed, so we don’t publish prices for that reason. Get in touch and we’ll assess it properly before quoting. There’s no obligation to work with us.
Work carried out by Mountain Chassis is covered by the same 3-year frame warranty. For standalone retrofit work, we’ll confirm the applicable warranty as part of your quote.
